Many SEO do this with short cut, fast and ineffective ways. As I have mentioned before in link building posts, it is imperative that getting quality backlinks are important.
However, many SEO people use massive submissions instantly and now many search engines discount and devalue several types of backlinks for Page Rank system. However, it is not the end of the world, you still get some quality traffic if you build gradually and right ways. Do not just alarm search engines with thousands of inbound links in a single month just to get traffic, build slowly and build properly. So, following are off-page optimization methods that you can implement.
- Inbound link anchor text, the text in the paragraph neighboring that anchor text
- On page relevancies that link to the page
- Appropriate directory listing and categories your site is listed in
- Titles of the pages linking to your particular page
