09 Oct 08 Adding Google XML Sitemap to your WordPress

When it comes to search engines, top 3 search engines always come to our mind. Of course, they are Google, Yahoo and MSN Search. So, the Internet search world become very common from these 3 search engines. And it’s very important that your website is indexed to those big 3. Some may argue that ask.com is equally important.

Yes, you could say so.. If you believe google, yahoo, msn and ask.com are your main search engines.. This wordpress plug-in will just solve all your problems all at once. Because thse XML compliant site maps will create, update, modify and send update request to google, yahoo, msn and ask.com as soon as you have composed your article/post. 

All the credit goes to Arne Brachhold, who is a creator of this plug-in.  You can download the XML Sitemaps plug-in here. To quote what Mr. ARne Brachhold’s installation instructions, the list can be seen as below. Most important thing is, when you do the ftp, please make sure you use the program that can do “change mode” functions. Some ftp do not offer “chmod” commands for security reasons. I will use the direct reference from original page, so that your installation will go smoother.

Upload the full directory into your wp-content/plugins directory

Use your favorite FTP program to create two files in your WordPress directory (that’s where the wp-config.php is) named sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz and make them writable via CHMOD 666. More information about CHMOD and how to make files writable is available at the WordPress Codex and on stadtaus.com. Making your whole blog directory writable is NOT recommended anymore due to security reasons.

Activate the plugin at the plugin administration page

Open the plugin configuration page, which is located under Options -> XML-Sitemap and build the sitemap the first time. If you get a permission error, check the file permissions of the newly created files.

The plugin will automatically update your sitemap as soon as you publish a post. So, you have been successfully completed getting index in major search engines.

It is true. Make search engines to fall in love with your site/blog to crawl. Because search engines play important role to give you  a lot of traffic. Yes.. “Massive traffic” are the words I love to use..

So, make search engines and their spiders love your site.. so, basically here are the checklist you should “DO” and “DON’T“. So, I will share you what are the big “DON’Ts”

Simply Don’t Make These, So your website/blog will be attractive to search engines spiders.

1. Inadequate inbound links (if you have 10 web-pages, don’t let the search engine come and index your site, it’s useless, Because you  have very few inbound links and possible none-outbound links and surely no back-links.
2. Splash pages (graphic oriented pages including animations, flash and media files embedded). Search engines love texts, they can’t identify Bart Simpson by photo, but maybe the word “Bart”.. so, if you understand how search engines feel, you get an advantage.
3. Flash everything. (you can actually use two DIV to divide flash and html, but mostly, if you are content oriented or automated solution such as blogs, it won’t work.. besides, adding twice for both flash and html contents are totally waste of time, if you do not really need the flash file in first place. Most importantly, visitors love fast pages to load as they don’t want to spend waiting while browsing the website.
4. Unprofessional design. First impression is always important, when a website visitor/blog reader arrive your website/blog, and after 5 seconds, it’s all Ads and Affiliates but little bit of contents and unprofessional web design or layout. Or 50 total pages, 51 dead-links or file-not-found pages. That’s going to be your last impression. And you will lose that particular visitor forever. YES, EVER.
5. Uselessness of Java script only navigation. Once again, don’t use them, it is not awesome, if you want nice, good looking site, CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) can help you make it look better. Use the list-based CSS ones or you need to provide a text equivalent link to your web-pages, so that search engines can read it alternatively. ****Last but not least***
6. Duplicate contents. Don’t plagiarise, don’t copy and paste. Don’t cheat, don’t use duplicate contents, I have said before, for example, google uses over 500 million variables and 2 billion terms to do indexing, so don’t discount what Google, Yahoo or MSN Live can do, they can do many things that we have never dreamed of.

Google is a now household name in the world. In order to receive web traffic to your site, you need to start with google.  of course there will be many many website search engine promotion.

I would like to explain a little about how google works and its technology. Sometimes it is important to know what you are doing and why you are doing SEO works. There are a few things to keep in mind when you start a blog or wiki or any website for extra income. You must have

The trick is, all the we all stick to one interest when we do blogging or business, because google will not only analyse the contents and consistencies of the keywords, but also track the neighboring links that are also relevant to the data. I am positive I am giving free articles and using commonly used “keywords”, so even if I have my ads display from Google AdSense, I will not earn much by using the most common words such as wordpress, free, post, links, google, yahoo and msn. They are not money words, but my main intention is to distribute the knowledge before money, but if your interest is collecting antiques, civil law, housing projects, or even cosmetics, it may bring better pay keywords at your site.

Just one important thing, stick to what you love to write, all the connected links should be relevant to your topic. Many people always ignore this fact, because most of the SEO people will talk about pagerank and their paid-services to attract the advertisers/visitors. And most bloggers or website operators never read what google has to offer, rather they end up reading on marketing sites. The money in this article is, if you submit your website link to qualified and quality search engines, also high Page Rank free listing directories (for google it’s no longer relevant for backlinks at the moment), it is more effective than submitting to low page rank web pages, posts or directories. Time is money and if you do not use your time effectively, you are losing money otherwise and you are making your opportunity cost higher by not effeiciently allocating your time.

Adding google analytics to your wordpress

Today, I will talk about setting up the wordpress on your website, it is mostly very easy to most of the webhosting, or if you are using wordpress.com blog or blogger.com blog. 

From my experience, it is easy to edit blogger.com blog account to set up google analytics and i will not go into details (you can edit the html and insert the google analytics codes and you are done). However, my main focus is to earn money by using wordpress. I am actually using blogger.com to mirror all my postings there as a backup as well… So, I will sometimes include the use of blogger as well.

What is wordpress?

The website you are looking at now, http://infomm.com is created with entirely wordpress materials. It is important to register as a user at www.wordpress.com to get an account active. More information related to having an account at wordpress will be revealed later.

Most hosting services (PHP hosting) will have wordpress auto-installer, commonly known as Fantastico installer, with Fantastico installer, you can install wordpress blog in a couple of minutes. 

Otherwise, if you would like to install manually, you will have to visit www.wordpress.com and download the zip or tar ball file, manually install on your server.

What is google analytics?

Google analytics are tools that you can basically find out what’s going on with your website, it is a free service and fantastic stats you can learn for your website.  I will quote a bit from google.com’s explanation. 

“Google Analytics shows you how people found your site, how they explored it, and how you can enhance their visitor experience. Improve your website return on investment, increase conversions, and make more money on the web.

With over 80 reports, your free Google Analytics account will track visitors through your site, and will keep track of the performance of your marketing campaigns“ 

In order to sign up an account, you just create/need one with your Gmail address, Google Analytics and you are ready for one.

How much does Google Analytics cost?

It costs absolutely FREE, Yes, It is free, But this FREE service offers a great source of web-stats you will ever experience to gather information about your website. Moreover, if you are generating money from AdSense or promoting your website as AdWords, you will also need to know how it works. Formally, as of today, AdWords advertising campaign has built-in Google Analytics.

Now, you got google analytics ready. It’s time to add wordpress plug-in into your wordpress.

Acquiring Google Analytics plug-in for WordPress

First download the file and read the instruction here.

This section describes how to install the plugin and get it working.

1. Delete any existing gapp folder from the /wp-content/plugins/ directory
2. Upload gapp folder to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory
3. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
4. Go to the options panel under the ‘Plugins’ menu and add your Analytics account number and set the settings you want.

There, you are good to track everything about your website..
